EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an integrative psychological approach for treating disorders and emotional difficulties that are rooted in disturbing life experience(s). In plain English, it is a therapy that helps clients work through the upsetting events in their lives. Upsetting life experiences range in intensity from traumatic events such as combat stress, assaults, and natural disaster, to upsetting childhood events such as humiliation experiences, bullying, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Divorce, painful break-ups, job loss, accidents, unemployment, business setbacks, loss of a loved one, and health problems are also examples of life-events that can overwhelm us.
